International Data Corporation (IDC) in its report has stated that Apple iPhone has lost ground to RIM BlackBerry and Palm Centro in USA during the first quarter. It’s market share is now 19.2 percent down from 26.7 percent in fourth quarter last year.
RIM is still the leader as its market share went up from 35.1 percent in the fourth quarter to 44.5 percent in the first. Palm’s Centro came third with a market share of 13.4 percent, up from 7.9 percent in the fourth quarter.
Fourth and fifth ranking went to Samsung and HTC with 8.6 and 4.1 percent share respectively. Motorolla came sixth with 2.6 percent share down from 7.5 percent in fourth quarter.
IDC is a global provider of market intelligence, advisory services, and events for the information technology, telecommunications and consumer technology markets. IDC helps IT professionals, business executives, and the investment community make fact-based decisions on technology purchases and business strategy.
Apple sold 1.7 million iPhones, down from 2.3 million units it sold during the fourth-quarter. This could be due to the fact that new version of iPhone is round the corner and people may be waiting for it.
According to IDC analyst Ramon Llamas:
BlackBerry is now strong in the “prosumer” segment, as RIM has successfully widened the appeal of the device beyond the professionals who have been its core customer group.
