Pakistan and India in top 9 among IP violaters: US report

May 12th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

According to an annual report issued by the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR) on Intellectual Property (IP) rights violation, Pakistan and India are in top nine.

Other countries in top nine include China, Russia, Argentina, Chile, Israel, Thailand and Venezuela.
The administration on Friday placed the nine countries on a “priority watch list” that will subject them to extra scrutiny and could eventually lead to economic sanctions — if the administration decides to pursue complaints before the World Trade Organisation.

USTR is responsible for developing and recommending United States trade policy to the President of the United States, conducting trade negotiations at bilateral and multilateral levels, and coordinating trade policy within the government through the inter agency Trade Policy Staff Committee (TPSC) and Trade Policy Review Group (TPRG).

USTR in its annual report has issued a list of 46 countries where IP violations are rampant which could result in trade restrictions.

Paksitan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has started a crack down on illegal CDs, DVDs and other copyright violations. Most of the CDs and DVDs available in Pakistan are either China or Malaysia made.
