An Italian commercial television network Mediaset has sued Google over YouTube copyright infringement. Google is already battling Viacom in court over YouTube copyright issue.
Mediaset which was founded by Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, filed a lawsuit on 30 July, 08 in Rome, Itlay for US$779 million dollars (€500 million).
The suit filed in civil court states that that on June 10, 325 hours worth of material in 4643 vidoes was uploaded to YouTube and the result was the loss of 315,672 viewing days and ad revenue.
Mediaset which controls four free to air terrestrial channels didn’t mention in its lawsuit the amount lost in advertising revenue.
In response to this lawsuit Google released a statement which reiterates its stance that it prohibit users from uploading copyright material. The statement reads:
There is no need for legal action as we prohibit users from uploading infringing material and we cooperate with all copyright holders to identify and promptly remove infringing content as soon as we are officially notified.
YouTube goes far beyond its legal obligations in assisting content owners to protect their works as it has faithfully followed the DMCA and responded to claims of infringement.
