Bill Gates to show TouchWall computer; a research prototype

May 14th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

Microsoft Chairman Bill Gates will show off latest research prototype called “TouchWall” at Microsoft CEO summit on Wednesday.

TouchWall refers to the touch screen hardware setup itself; the corresponding software to run TouchWall, which is built on a standard version of Vista, is called Plex.

Both TouchWall and Surface another Microsoft’s product seems similar at first sight although TochWall is bigger in size.

Gates’ demo comes as part of the company’s CEO summit, an annual gathering of business leaders that runs through Thursday at Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Wash.

No details have been given by Microsoft on availability of the device commercially. It must be interesting to note that it is not being developed by the Surface unit, but rather is a collaboration between Microsoft Research and the company’s newly formed Office Labs unit.

TouchWall is cheaper to produce than Surface.

According to Microsoft Director of Envisioning Ian Sands:

While Surface retails at around $10,000, the hardware to “turn almost anything into a multi-touch interface” for TouchWall is just “hundreds of dollars” says Sands.
