China and USA are leading sources of cyber attacks

June 2nd, 2008 by Kiyani ~ 1 Comment

Akamai Technologies, Inc. in its report has said that China and US are the leading sources of hacking attacks, especially against Windows systems.

Akamai provides distributed computing platform for global Internet content and application delivery.

According to the report, of all the attacks during the first quarter of 2008 31 percent were originated from China and US. China’s share in attacks was 17 percent followed by US 14 percent.

Other countries leading cyber attacks are Argentina, Brazil, India, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey.

Most attacks were aimed at Microsoft Windows in the form of malwares, viruses and trojans. Around one-third of the attacks (30 per cent) targeted port 135, which is used for remote procedure calls in Windows. The port was used by the infamous Blaster worm to spread onto unpatched PCs back in 2003. Port 139, generally used for Windows network shares, and port 22 (used by SSH), were also frequently attacked. Attacks associated with port 22 would commonly involve attempts to work out remote access passwords by brute force and accounted for 12 per cent of attack traffic.

The report said:

While that’s not to say that there are not any current pieces of malware that attack these ports, it may point to a large pool of Microsoft Windows-based systems that are insufficiently maintained, and remain unpatched years after these attacks ‘peaked’ and were initially mitigated with updated software.

Last month India and Belgium accused China of hacking into Government systems and websites.

Well, the problem is there are a LOT of open relays in China (More so than anywhere else). Hackers anywhere can use an open relay and make it APPEAR to be coming from China when in fact it could be initiated from the US or anywhere else.
