Google Earth tracks climate change

May 19th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

Google Earth is mapping climate change hot spots in collaboration with the UK government, the Met Office and the British Antarctic Survey.

It is tracking the effects of climate change all over the world.
The initiative was launched by UK prime minister Gordon Brown at the Google Zeitgeist conference today.

Google Earth Outreach provides two new ‘layers’ to all users of Google Earth which highlight various aspects of the planet’s changing climate.

The Met Office Hadley Centre has produced a layer which illustrates their future temperature modeling, showing an animation of temperature change over the next hundred years and its impact to particular parts of the world.

The scientists of the British Antarctic Survey have developed a layer which details how they monitor and measure the effects of climate change in Antarctica, featuring stunning images that show the retreat of the ice from this environmentally-sensitive continent.

According to Environment Secretary Hilary Benn:

Climate change is redrawing the map of the world. Unless we act, its impact will be felt everywhere as sea levels rise, crops fail, extreme weather increases and more areas are at risk of drought and flooding.

Users can also access information on action that can be taken by individuals, communities, businesses and governments to tackle climate change, and highlights work already underway.

Google Earth Outreach Showcase, provides more than 100 examples of KML content telling stories about our planet.

Benn said:

This project shows the reality of climate change using estimates of the change in the average temperature where they live, and the impact it will have on people’s lives all over the world, including here in Britain.
