Google search now available over an IPv6 connection

May 14th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

Google Blog has just announced the availability of Google search over an IPv6 connection.

Because of limited numbers of IPv4 connections left and the fact that by 2011 its capacity could be “exhausted”, this comes as no surprise.

Currently in use, Internet Protocol version 4 (IPv4) is the fourth iteration of the Internet Protocol (IP) and it can only provide 4 billion IP addresses which will finish quickly by looking at how demand is increasing. IPv6 on the other hand can enable each individual person on Earth to have nearly 3 billion networks. In a different perspective, this is 252 addresses for every star in the known universe – more than ten billion billion billion times as many addresses per star as IPv4 can support.

According to the Google blog post:

We hope it’s only a matter of time before IPv6 is widely deployed. We will be doing our part.

Users having an IPv6 connection can access Google search here.

The main change brought by IPv6 is a much larger address space that allows greater flexibility in assigning addresses. The extended address length eliminates the need to use network address translation to avoid address exhaustion, and also simplifies aspects of address assignment and renumbering when changing providers.
