August 5th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

Tight Chinese censorship on internet and media dubbed as Great Firewall of China has been cracked open on the eve of Beijing Olympics as Global Internet Freedom Consortium (GIFC) has released a set of five tools that will allow users free access to internet.

The set includes tool for encrypting traffic, hiding the user’s IP address and enabling FTP downloads through which internet users in China will be able to bypass country’s strong censorship. They are:

  • UltraSurf
    Freely visit blocked websites
  • FreeGateTool
For secure and fast internet access
  • GTunnelIt
Works as a local HTTP or SOCKS proxy server
  • FirePhoenix
    A VPN based tool
  • GPass
Tool for encrypted storage and personal data management

GIFC’s mission is to build a pioneering online platform that breaks down the Great Firewalls most notably China and Iran, blocking the free flow of information penetrating into, moving within, and originating from closed societies via the Internet.

According to GIFC website:

Just as the Berlin Wall once fell when the East Germans came together and demanded their freedom, we, too, will give those living in closed societies the technology to take down the Great Firewall that separates them from the rest of the world.

The tools are available for download from GIFC website and till now more than 1 million users in China have downloaded them.
