While looking at Google Executives page here I came across some thing called “Google.org”. I have never heard of it before. I am sure some or most of you may have heard of it but this was something new for me. How many of you already knows about it please post your comments.
Google.org helps to address some of the world’s most urgent problems by contributing significant resources, including 1% of Google’s equity and profits in some form.
According to Google.org website:
Google.org is a hybrid philanthropy that uses a range of approaches to help advance solutions within our five initiatives. We operate in a traditional manner by supporting our partners’ work with targeted grants. But we can also invest in for-profit endeavors, such as efforts by companies to develop breakthrough renewable energy technologies. Our structure also allows us to lobby for policies that support our philanthropic goals. Additionally, we can tap Google’s innovative technology and, most importantly, its inspired workforce. We’ve already begun to donate and invest Google.org’s funds, and we expect to continue to do so in the future.
Some of their current projects are:
- RE<C
RE<C will work to develop electricity from renewable energy sources that is cheaper than electricity produced from coal with a goal of producing one gigawatt of renewable energy capacity – enough to power a city the size of San Francisco – in years, not decades. - RechargeIt
RechargeIT is a Google.org initiative that aims to reduce CO2 emissions, cut oil use and stabilize the electrical grid by accelerating the adoption of plug-in hybrid electric vehicles and vehicle-to-grid technology. - Predict & Prevent
Rapid ecological and social changes are increasing the risk of emerging threats, from infectious diseases to drought and other environmental disasters. This initiative will use information and technology to empower communities to predict and prevent emerging threats before they become local, regional, or global crises. - Inform & Empower
This project is aimed at providing meaningful, easily accessible information to citizens and communities, service providers, and policymakers. It’s a key part of creating home-grown solutions to improve the quality of public services. - SMEs
Small and medium sized enterprises (SMEs) are critical for creating more equitable economic growth. While SMEs in rich countries represent half of GDP, they are largely absent from the formal economies of developing countries. With this initiative Google wants to show that SMEs can be profitable investments. They will do this by focusing on lowering transaction costs, deepening capital markets to increase liquidity, and catalyzing capital for investment.
