HTC beats Apple again with Microsoft based 3G phone

May 6th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

On Tuesday High Tech Computer announced the “HTC Touch Diamond”, a smart phone running Microsoft Windows Mobile 6.1 Professional and with a touch screen designed for one-handed use.

This handset is 3G beating Apple’s iPhone and is the next generation of HTC’s popular Touch smart phone, which has sold over 3 million units in the 10 months since its launch.

Last year, HTC beat Apple by launching its first Touch handset nearly a month ahead of the iPhone. Apple is expected to release 3G iPhone in a few months.

The HTC Touch Diamond works on WCDMA (Wideband Code Division Multiple Access) networks and offers data rates up to 7.2M bits per second using HSPA (High Speed Packet Access) thanks to a chipset from Qualcomm. It will be available throughout Europe starting in June, followed by Asia and the Middle East. The handset will hit North and South America in the second half of the year.

HTC CEO Peter Chou said:

This is going to be the biggest product of my life.

HTC Touch Diamond has following features:

  • Customized applications for watching YouTube videos and using Google Maps for map and traffic data
  • GPS (Global Positioning System)
  • 3.2 mega pixel camera with auto focus and video calling
  • Bluetooth
  • Wi-Fi 802.11b/g

The area where Apple still has upper hand is the data storage as Diamond has only 4Gb of memory compared to iPhone’s 8Gb or 16GB
