ICANN and IANA domains hijacked by Turkish hackers

June 27th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

Yesterday a group of hackers called NetDevilz hijacked ICANN and IANA domains (screenshot below). It’s the same group that  hijacked Photobucket’s domain on 18 June, 2008.

ICANN is the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers whose job is to oversee a number of Internet-related tasks previously performed directly on behalf of the U.S. Government by other organizations, notably the The Internet Assigned Numbers Authority (IANA).

IANA is the entity that oversees global IP address allocation, DNS root zone management, media types, and other Internet protocol assignments.

The very organizations that oversee domain name registration and coordinate the management of the technical elements of the DNS to ensure universal resolvability, had their own official domains hijacked. The domains are icann.net; icann.com; iana-servers.com; internetassignednumbersauthority.com and iana.com.

NetDevilz left the following message on all of the domains:

You think that you control the domains but you don’t! Everybody knows wrong. We control the domains including ICANN! Don’t you believe us? haha :) (Lovable Turkish hackers group) We’re not first, But we’re the BEST!

They redirected visitors to Atspace.com, 82.197.131.106, the same ISP they used in the Photobucket’s DNS hijacking.
