India accuses China of hacking

May 9th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

After Belgium it’s India’s turn to point fingers at China for hacking and cyber crimes. According to Times of India, the country’s largest circulation daily newspaper, Indian websites particularly Government owned are under attack from China.

It’s been going on for the past one year and attacks are increasing day by day.
The rivalry between India and China whether online or offline is nothing new and it’s been going on for many years. Government sources say they have traced attacks to servers in China. Although they haven’t openly said that the Chinese government is directly responsible but by the looks of it this is what it seems to be. They said the attacking servers are under indirect control of the People’s Liberation Army.

India gave examples of attacks on the National Informatics Centre, the information technology backbone of the Indian government, the Web site of the Ministry of External Affairs, and the web site of the Cabinet secretariat.

According to the report published in Times of India:

Tthe attacks are not isolated incidents of something as generic or basic as hacking. They are far more sophisticated and complete, and there is a method to the madness.

Recently Cabinet Secretariat,Govt.of India website (cabsec.gov.in) came under severe attack and was defaced for several hours.

It is interesting to note when it comes to China every body says that it’s the government responsible with out solid proof. On the other hand in case of other countries particularly western ones, individuals are blamed.

Germany, USA and UK have also blamed China for hacking of their websites. In May 2007 computers of Chancellor Angela Merkel’s office and three of her ministries were hacked into by Chinese hackers. and in September 2007 a confidential Pentagon report alleged that Chinese military hackers had prepared a detailed plan to disable the U.S. aircraft battle carrier fleet with a devastating cyber attack.

The report stated the following three main weapons employed by hackers:

  • Bots
  • Key Loggers
  • Mapping of Indian networks
