A German website has reported that Apple plans to use Intel Atom processor in iPhone. According to the report Intel Germany CEO Hannes Schwaderer has confirmed it.
The Atom will be used in Mini-Tablet iPhone a bigger model with 720×480 display.
Describing Atom processor Intel Executive Vice President Sean Maloney once said:
This is our smallest processor built with the world’s smallest transistors. The Intel® Atomâ„¢ processor is based on an entirely new design, built for low power and designed specifically for a new wave of Mobile Internet Devices and simple, low-cost PC’s.
The reason why it will be used in Mini-Tablet iPhone and not regular one is because the current generation of Atom is not quite right for smartphones like the iPhone: it gives off too much heat to be practical in a device the size of the regular iPhone.
Rumors about Apple deciding to throw all of its eggs into Intel’s chip-making basket have been persistent ever since Intel started talking about its Silverthorne processor, which is now known as Atom. It is designed for a 45 nm CMOS process and intended for use in ultra-mobile PCs, smart phone and other portable and low-power applications.
An Intel representative said he was looking into the report, but doubted that the Intel executive had actually confirmed such a plan.
Atom provides fastest performance in a sub 3 watt thermal power envelope based on industry leading benchmarks (EEMBC) and web page rendering performance. It has a 533MHz front-side bus.
