LG and Samsung join hands for US mobile TV standard

May 15th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

LG Electronics and Samsung have join hands for a new North American mobile digital TV standard that will be proposed to the Advanced Television Systems Committee (ATSC).

Representatives of both companies met in Seoul to sign the agreement for a single common in-band mobile digital TV standard.

JongWoo Park, president of Samsung’s Digital Media Business said:

Our collaboration will help accelerate the ATSC standardization of mobile TV technology, which will benefit consumers and broadcasters.

The proposed standard will have no impact on existing digital TV and requires minimum broadcasting equipment investment as it will use the existing terrestrial digital TV broadcast bandwidth.

The Open Mobile Video Coalition (OMVC) earlier conducted trials of the system whose findings will be reflected by LG and Samsung in the report to be submitted to ATSC.
OMVC is a group of US broadcasters promoting the development and early deployment of mobile digital TV.

According to Woo Paik, president and chief technology officer at LG:

LG and Samsung are already world-class in digital TV and mobile communications. We also have an opportunity to lead the North American mobile digital TV market.

The ATSC is expected to adopt the mobile TV standard for the North American market in early 2009.
According to a study conducted by the National Association of Broadcasters, the adoption of a single mobile digital TV standard would drive the sale of 130 million mobile digital TV phones by the end of 2012.
