Meet Red-ray, a Blu-ray rival from China

May 27th, 2008 by Kiyani ~ No Comments

Just when we thought the DVD format war is over, we have got new player Red-ray and this time from China.

Blu-ray may have defeated HD-DVD but now it faces another challenge from Chinese made Red-ray DVD.

Chinese research firm CCID Consulting recently announced that the country’s independently developed Red-ray high-definition DVD has made great progress in terms of resolution and capacity, and has a price advantage over Blu-ray.

It is the leading market research and advisory firm focused on China’s IT industries.

The biggest challenge Red-ray faces at the moment is to get industry support in terms of content, building up an industrial supply chain, including optical head, chip, whole machine, disk and content.

CCID believes that Red-ray will eventually beat Blu-ray by keeping price down and making improvements. High patent fees were the major factor restricting exports, offering a potential contributor to the future success of Red-ray. The research firm said that 94 per cent of global DVD players are made in China, although the export volume of players shrank in 2007 to 143 million sets.

High patent fees were the major factor restricting exports, offering a potential contributor to the future success of Red-ray. CCID said that China can extend itself from a producer to a creator only by breakthoughs in core technology and innovations in technical standards.

The Red-ray Forward Versatile Disk(FVD) format was first proposed in 2005 by a consortium of Taiwanese vendors, including U-Tecg Media, CMC Magnetics, Benq and other LCD manufacturers. They hoped that mainland China will swing behind “Red Ray” format which will eventually win DVD format war.
