Microsoft has announced that it plans to release DirectX 11 later this year which will have new shader technology.
While giving details at the annual GameFest developer conference in Seattle, Microsoft said that with new DirectX 11 developers will be able to use GPU more effectively by using it as a parallel processor.
According to Chris Satchell, CTO at Microsoft’s entertainment business division.:
How about a new shader technology that gets your GPU ready to do more than just boring old 3D graphics – instead programmers can take advantage of the graphics card as a parallel processor.
Other features included in DirectX 11 are:
- Support for tessellation, giving models a smoother appearance when viewed up close
- Multi-threaded resource handling to make the most of multi-processor set-ups
The new SDK for DirectX 11 will be fully compatible with DirectX 10 but for that you will need Windows Vista. It does not require new graphics card to be purchased and will work with older ones supporting DirectX 10.
Microsoft DirectX is a collection of application programming interfaces (APIs) for handling tasks related to multimedia, especially game programming and video, on Microsoft platforms.
