House Republicans have asked the Democratic leadership to act fast on Bill Gates’ increasingly urgent calls for an increase in H1B visas for foreign high-tech workers. In a letter to Speaker Nancy Pelosi, the House Republican Study Group said:
As a country, we are effectively handing these highly-educated, extremely desirable individuals a diploma and a plane ticket. The message we are sending is “You can learn here, but you have to work in another country.
The current H1B quota is 65000 which is stuck for the past many years and the American high tech companies especially Microsoft have been lobbying to increase it to fill demand supply gap. Last year H1B quota was finished on second day while this year USCIS gave companies 5 days for filing.
The Republicans asked for movement on HB 1930, which would increase the H1B cap from 65,000 to 115,000 and calls for a 20% increase every year that the cap is met.By TC’s reckoning all three of the remaining candidates favor increasing the limit.
