NASA hacker to be extradited to USA after losing final appeal

Gary McKinnon, the UK systems administrator who hacked into Nasa and Pentagon computers in 2001 and 2002 has lost final appeal against extradition to USA.

McKinnon who also goes by the nickname Solo, appealed to the House of Lords which was rejected. He will now be extradited to USA.

According to the details he gained unauthorised remote access to 70 US-based computers, including those of Nasa, the US Department of Defense and the US Air Force, Army and Navy.

The US estimates claim the costs of tracking and correcting the problems he allegedly caused were around $700,000.

He was never tried in UK and his lawyers said after the extradition hearing that:

American officials involved in this case have stated that they want to see him ‘fry’.

If found guilty in the USA, McKinnon could face up to 70 years in prison and fines of up to $1.75 million. His lawyers have voewed to take the case to the European Court of Human Rights in Strasbourg, France.
