Companies mostly fear hackers. Not.
Enterprise security firm Secure Computing recently conducted a survey according to which it was revealed that most companies fear their employees when it comes to security.
More than 80 per cent of 103 directors surveyed responded that problems created by employees are far more serious than the dangers posed by external hackers and criminals.
According to the report this could be due in part to 37 per cent of respondents having experienced a leak of sensitive information in the past year.
Kieran Lees, regional sales director at Secure Computing said:
It is fascinating to see how perceptions of the threat landscape among senior IT decision makers is evolving. The insider threat and data leakage now rival traditional external threats among IT directors’ primary concerns. It is very encouraging to see that security is starting to be seen as a genuine business enabler rather than just a necessary evil.
Most directors put internal security at top when asked to rank potential future investments that included perimeter security, staff mobility and network performance.
In terms of internal security 34 percent of respondents said email is the biggest risk. While 25 percent voted for VoIP and 21percent for browser-related threats.
In terms of external security viruses topped the list with 31 per cent of respondents, followed by spam 18 per cent and data leaks 14 per cent.
Malware appears to be a major headache too with 56 per cent identifying it as their biggest worry.
Yousif Yalda a former Kaspersky information security officer, and V.A.P.T. CEO and Founder gave another perspective by saying:
Organizations hire developers who don’t implement a security cycle in safely processing and storing information. Rather, they continuously push code in the form of massive functionality, instead of handling user input in a secure manner which results in breach.
Less than a quarter of respondents feel that hacking is the biggest threat.
