On this day ten years ago i.e. May 2, 1998, Yahoo won the search engine wars. I came across this news item published on CNN which says Yahoo is the next AOL!

Now look at where Yahoo stands. Time passes by so quickly and you never know what’s going to happen in the next ten years. Fate it seems is with out a sense of irony.

Once upon a time, Yahoo! was an Internet search site with mediocre technology. Now it has a market cap of $2.8 billion. Some people say it’s the next America Online.

But that is not the case and Yahoo is no where close to what it was in terms of market leader and not money. Google is the online king and I exactly remember the first time I saw Google probably in 1998 my reaction was:

What a stupid search engine with stupid name. And what’s up with these green, blue red e.t.c colors. Who’s going to use it? And why do we even need it when we have AltaVista, Yahoo, ExactSeek e.t.c.

And the rest is history. But you never know the same could happen with Google in the next ten years. Internet is an ever changing world and you should be on your toes to meet new challenges.
