Seems like those rumors that originated some time back are going to be true. There has been a talk in the town that YouTube might go HD this year. In November 2007 YouTube co-founder Steve Chen also hinted at the upgrade coming in 3 months. This will increase bandwidth and processing requirements manifold and YouTube is working on system testing. Here you can compare one YouTube video in both formats, Standard and High Definition.

HD: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CQzUsTFqtW0&fmt=18
Keep in mind, this will do nothing to make movies of people getting kicked in the nuts taken from cell phone cameras look any better.
In 2006 while speaking at the Intel Developer Forum, Intel CEO Paul Otellini said that “the inevitable next step for YouTube will be to distribute content in high definition”. Otellini explained the need for faster processing. “A YouTube stream would have occupied the majority of a PC’s CPU time 5-10 years ago”, he said two years ago. Today, it is a very small amount, allowing us to do many other things simultaneously.
So all YouTube fans watch out and keep your fingers crossed.
