Toshiba has launched a new XDE (eXtended Detail Enhancement) DVD player that makes existing DVDs look like new HD. And you don’t need extra hardware or Blu-Ray discs for that.
The XD-E500 player launched by Toshiba America Consumer Products ups resolution from 480i/p to 1080p. According to Louis Masses, director of Product Planning:
Consumers have embraced the DVD format like no other technology and invested in large libraries of their favorite movies. As the market moves towards high definition, XDE lets them experience their existing DVD library and the tens of thousands of DVD titles in a whole new way.
It works with existing DVDs to deliver a near HD experience with enhanced detail and richer colors. Now consumers don’t need to buy a whole new set of films as XDE player improves image sharpness, contrast and colour to give near high definition viewing.
This product is meant to improve playback of DVDs on HD TV using one of the technologies known as “Sharp Mode” which is supposed to make edges sharp and get one step closer to high definition.
One of the major features of XD-E500 is that it can output in 24 frames per second mode. Although it may reduce some of the 2:3 pull-down judder that’s visible essentially every time you watch a DVD but it is yet to be seen.
With a retail price of just $150 it sure is going to rock.
