AMD launches quad-core Opteron SE processor

Advanced Micro Devices Inc. (AMD) has launched four new quad-core Opteron SE processors for two-, four- and eight-socket commodity x86 systems. The new processors are comparable to larger, more costly symmetric multiprocessing (SMP) hardware.

Intel fined $25.4 million for anti-trust abuse by South Korea

The Korea Fair Trade Commission, South Korea’s antitrust regulator has fined Intel US $25.4 million for allegedly abusing its dominant position in the local chip market.
Bruce Sewell, general counsel Intel, criticized the ruling and told that the company will appeal against this judgement.

Intel Atom to power Apple Tablet iPhone

A German website has reported that Apple plans to use Intel Atom processor in iPhone. According to the report Intel Germany CEO Hannes Schwaderer has confirmed it.
The Atom will be used in Mini-Tablet iPhone a bigger model with 720×480 display.

IBM showcases small supercomputer for organizations

IBM has announced that it will release QS22 BladeCenter server powered by a Cell processor next month. It’s like a small supercomputer and is aimed at enterprise level organizations.
This will be the first initiative by any company to offer small supercomputer to organizations.

AMD unleashes low power quad-core processors

Advanced Micro Devices has announced the availability of low-power quad-core Opteron processors for server systems.
These are B3 versions of its low-power Quad-Core Opteron processors which AMD first showed in September 2007.

Toshiba laptop to have IBM’s cell processor

Toshiba has announced that it will release a laptop with a variant of cell processor jointly developed by and alliance of Sony, Toshiba and IBM known as STI. No firm date of laptop launch has been given but it is expected to be released this year.
Sony’s PlayStation also uses cell processor.

New supercomputers to improve climate change predictions

A supercomputer with low-power embedded microprocessors, has been proposed by three researchers from the U.S. Department of Energy’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (Berkeley Lab) to improve global climate change predictions.
This is an innovative approach that would overcome limitations posed by today’s conventional supercomputers.
